While not as "tres bien" as "The Big Kitchen," here are a few of my favorite independent, eclectic, unpretentious places in the bay area:

Bongo Burger (Berkeley) - This has turned into a small local chain, but it's been my favorite burger/breakfast place since college. Try the Persian burger.
Millbrae Pancake House (Millbrae) - Think Denny's, if Denny's had good food and good service and a line out the door. I swear that I was once served here by "Flo" from Alice.
The Grill (San Mateo) - I'm pretty sure they use frozen hash browns and corned beef from a can, but damned if it isn't tasty and cheap.

I completely missed whatever went on and was really sorry to hear you left FF. I hope the disappointment fades quickly and you remember the good times.
